Fox in the Rice Paddies

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 11

I spent the morning cleaning. I also talked to Olivia for three hours.

In the evening, I took my bike out and went for a ride among the rice paddies. The bugs were thick enough that I actually had to dig one out of the mucus of my eye, but the fields were gorgeous. I saw a fox, but it darted off as soon as I stopped my bicycle. It was beginning to get later, so I biked toward the mountains and ended up pedaling through a cute little neighborhood with Japanese style homes (beautiful architecture) a temple, and little two-way, one lane roads.

I went past a canal, where people were fishing and got some beautiful pictures of the sun setting over the mountains before my camera batteries died. On the other side of the canal, I bumped into a bike path, which I followed for a while. It paralleled the shore of a little bay. Then, it was getting dark, so I decided it was time to get home. I was coming back and I navigate by brilliant landmarks, like the pachico parlor, or the tall hotel, or the department store skyscraper.

About half way back, I took a turn into a little neighborhood and got twisted up in their dark, narrow streets. It was impossible to see any of my usual landmarks. I was never really “lost,” more... not quite sure where I was. I did eventually ask an older couple for directions to the train station, as that's fairly close to my house. They gave them to me in Japanese and I followed their hand motion. They told me to go straight for a long time, a little right, and straight. My instinct said left. It's a good thing I didn't listen to my instinct, because I eventually saw the department store's tower through the homes on the right.

Back at home, I decided to charge my GPS batteries so this doesn't happen again.
